About Foghorn
Foghorn is an iPhone app that helps people with ADHD actually start and finish their routines. It uses Apple's AlarmKit to sound full-screen alarms that break through Silent and Focus mode — so a routine can't be swiped away like a notification — and hands off into a one-step-at-a-time routine player that shows only the current step, never an overwhelming list. There's no account, no ads, and no analytics: everything Foghorn does stays on the device, with nothing ever transmitted to a server.
The story
Foghorn is built by a solo indie developer, for the same reason a lot of ADHD tools get built: the existing options didn't fit how an ADHD brain actually works. Reminders that are easy to swipe away and to-do lists that show everything at once both tend to backfire — the first gets ignored, the second gets overwhelming. Foghorn is a small, deliberately narrow attempt to fix just those two problems well, rather than to build a general-purpose productivity app with ADHD branding bolted on.
A few design principles guided every decision:
- No shame, ever. A broken streak is never treated as a failure. Skipping a step, missing a day, or coming back after a week away is never met with a guilt trip — Foghorn celebrates showing up again, not an unbroken streak.
- One thing at a time. The routine player shows exactly one step. Never a list, never a dashboard, never ten things competing for attention at once.
- Minimal friction. Fewer taps, fewer settings, smarter defaults. Every screen asks: what's the smallest number of decisions this can require?
- Warm, short copy. No commanding tone, no urgency-manufacturing notification language. The app talks the way a patient friend would.
Foghorn is not a medical device and does not provide medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. It's built for ADHD brains, not as a substitute for care.
